Crispy, sweet, and savory, Crab Rangoon is an appetizer that has it all. While most folks opt for store-bought, this insatiable appetizer is actually pretty simple to make yourself. 

Rangoon vs. Wonton 

The difference between Crab Rangoon and Wontons boils down (pun intended!) to the point of origin and ingredients. While Wontons are a timeless Chinese appetizer that typically features pork, Crab Rangoon is an American amalgamation that came out of mid-century Beverly Hills. However, both incorporate a delectable, crispy Wonton wrap and have similar preparation methods.

Consider what else you’re serving alongside your Crab Rangoon, and be sure to select a sauce that pairs well with the entree. Some popular options include sweet & sour, sesame ginger, yum yum, and honey garlic sauce.

Crab Rangoon Recipe

When people first learn how to make Crab Rangoon, they may be intimidated by folding the wrapper. Fortunately, it’s easier than it looks–just a matter of pinching the right places! 

Crab Rangoon Ingredients

  • 8 oz Cream Cheese Softened
  • 12 ounces (1 crab leg) steamed Extra, Extra Large Red King Crab Legs
  • 4 Green Onions Finely Chopped
  • 2 Garlic Cloves Diced
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sesame Oil
  • Salt - to taste
  • Pepper - to taste
  • Cooking Oil of Choice
  • Wonton Wrappers (You can find them online, or in the international section of your grocery store.)

Crab Rangoon Instructions

  1. Thaw and steam approximately 2 legs of Extra, Extra, Large Red King Crab, remove the meat from the shells. 
  2. Chop crab meat into small bits. 
  3. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add in crab meat, green onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and sesame oil, stir well to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Beat your egg and brush it across the edges of your wonton wrappers.
  5. Place roughly 1 tablespoon of your King Crab mix into the center of each wonton wrapper.
  6. Bring all four corners of the wonton wrapper to touch at the center. This will form an X shape. Pinch the corners and edges together to form a seal.
  7. Use a large pot to bring 3-4” of oil to 350°.
  8. With tongs, lower your wontons slowly into the oil.
  9. Cook until golden brown, usually 3-4 minutes.
