Known for their delicate flavors and mild, meaty texture, these wild Yellowfin Tuna filets (Ahi) are sure to impress even the most discerning palates.
At Alaskan King Crab Co., we take immense pride in providing the finest seafood delicacies, and now, we invite you to join us in mastering the art of preparing seared ahi tuna steaks in only 6 minutes!
Step 1: Selecting the Finest Tuna
A successful culinary creation begins with the finest ingredients. For our seared Yellowfin Tuna, we recommend sourcing high-quality, sushi-grade ahi tuna. Sushi-grade fish are caught, cleaned, and frozen at a very low temperature while the fish is still fresh. They’re kept frozen until any dangerous bacteria are killed, making them safe to eat raw. Our sushi-grade Yellowfin Tuna is wild-caught, flash-frozen, and ready to deliver overnight.
Step 2: Preparing the Marinade (optional)
While it may take a little extra time, the secret to elevating your ahi tuna steaks lies in a well-balanced marinade. In a mixing bowl, combine the following ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger
- 1 clove of garlic, minced
- A pinch of red pepper flakes (for a subtle kick)
- 1 teaspoon of honey (to balance the flavors)
Whisk the marinade until the ingredients meld into a blend, which will provide a perfect balance of umami and aromatic notes.
Step 3: Marinating the Ahi Tuna (optional)
Gently place the ahi tuna steaks into a shallow dish, ensuring they lay flat. Pour the marinade over the steaks, allowing the flavors to infuse for approximately 15 minutes. The marinade will enhance the tuna's natural flavors and tenderize the fish slightly, without overpowering its inherent taste.
Step 4: Preparing the Seared Ahi Tuna Steaks
While the tuna marinates, it's time to ready your pan. Choose a heavy-bottomed skillet or a cast-iron pan, as they offer excellent heat distribution. Heat a splash of sesame oil over medium-high heat, ensuring the oil reaches a simmering stage but doesn't smoke.
Step 5: Searing
Gently place the marinated ahi tuna steaks into the hot pan. Allow them to sear for approximately 1-2 minutes on each side, depending on your preferred level of doneness. For a true medium-rare experience, aim for 2 minutes per side (130°F internal). Remember, the magic of ahi tuna lies in its delicate texture, so avoid overcooking to preserve its tenderness.
Step 6: Plating and Garnishing
With the searing complete, carefully remove the ahi tuna steaks from the pan, placing them on a clean cutting board. Allow the steaks to rest for a few minutes before slicing. To serve, cut the steaks into even slices, garnish them with toasted sesame seeds, scallions, or soy sauce, and arrange them on a plate.
These tuna steaks go wonderfully with a multitude of side dishes, but these are our two favorites: a tangy Asian-style slaw or some beautifully sauteed vegetables. For the slaw, tossing together some shredded cabbage, carrots, and your favorite tangy dressing will perfectly complement the richness of the tuna. If slaw isn’t your favorite, it’s just as easy to quickly saute up some of your favorite vegetables: asparagus, green beans, or snap peas are all perfect additions.
